Material Preparation
EPDM granules: This is the core material of the pavement. You should choose products with high quality, bright color and strong weather resistance. The granules have various specifications according to the particle size. The common particle size used for pavement paving is about 1-3 mm. Particles of different colors can be matched according to design requirements to achieve a variety of patterns and color effects.
Glue: Special polyurethane glue is the key to firmly bond EPDM granules together. The glue must have good adhesion, water resistance and aging resistance to ensure that the particles will not fall off during long-term use of the pavement. According to the construction area and the amount of particles used, the demand for glue is accurately calculated.
Other auxiliary materials: such as interface agent, which is used to enhance the bonding force between the foundation and glue and particles; defoaming agent, which can reduce bubbles generated by stirring and other operations during construction, and ensure the flatness and beauty of the road surface.
Foundation Treatment
Clean the foundation: First, clean the debris, dust, oil stains, etc. on the surface of the road foundation to ensure that the foundation surface is clean and tidy. You can use brooms, hair dryers, high-pressure water guns and other tools for cleaning. If there are problems such as looseness and sand on the foundation surface, you need to repair and reinforce it first.
Flatness detection and repair: Use tools such as spirit levels and rulers to detect the flatness of the foundation. For uneven parts, use cement mortar or other suitable materials for leveling. Ensure that the flatness error of the foundation surface is controlled within the allowable range, and generally the height difference per square meter does not exceed 5 mm.
Apply interface agent: Apply a layer of interface agent evenly on the surface of the cleaned and leveled foundation to enhance the bonding performance between the foundation and the subsequent paving materials. The interface agent needs to be applied evenly and wait for it to dry before proceeding to the next step of construction.
Construction Process
Mixing ingredients: Pour EPDM particles and glue into the mixing equipment according to the specified ratio. First, stir at a low speed to make the particles and glue mix evenly, and then gradually increase the stirring speed to ensure sufficient stirring. The general stirring time is 3-5 minutes. During the stirring process, an appropriate amount of defoamer can be added as needed.
Spreading: Spread the mixed materials evenly on the foundation, and you can use scrapers, pavers and other tools to operate. According to the designed pavement thickness, control the paving thickness. Generally, the thickness of the colored EPDM particle pavement is about 5-10 mm. During the paving process, ensure that the materials are evenly distributed to avoid local accumulation or inconsistent thickness.
Compacting: Use a special roller or other compacting equipment to compact the paved pavement. The compaction process should follow the principle of light first and heavy later, slow first and fast later, and proceed step by step from the edge of the pavement to the middle to ensure uniform compaction of the pavement. The number of compactions is generally 2-3 times until the pavement surface is flat and dense, without obvious wheel marks.
Finishing: After the road surface is compacted, use a trowel or manual trowel to finish the road surface before the material is completely cured. Make the road surface smoother and flatter, and further improve the appearance of the road surface. Pay attention to the uniformity of force and direction when finishing to avoid smear marks.
Precautions
Construction environment: The construction of colored EPDM granular pavement should be carried out under suitable environmental conditions. The temperature should be controlled between 5℃ – 35℃, and the humidity should not be too high. Avoid construction in bad weather such as rainy days and windy days. If the ambient temperature is too low, the curing speed of the glue will slow down, affecting the construction progress and quality; too high humidity may cause the material to get damp and reduce the bonding performance.
Quality control: During the construction process, the quality of each link must be strictly controlled. Strictly check the quality of the materials to ensure that they meet the relevant standards; standardize the construction process, such as mixing time, paving thickness, compaction degree, etc. must meet the requirements. At the same time, the construction quality should be tested regularly, and if problems are found, they should be rectified in time.
Post-maintenance: After the pavement is paved, it needs to be maintained for a certain period of time. During the maintenance period, vehicles and pedestrians should be prohibited from passing to avoid damage to the pavement. The general maintenance time is 7-10 days. It can be put into use only after the glue is completely cured and the pavement reaches the designed strength
