How Many EPDM Particles are Needed to Build a Playground
Table of Contents
Let’s calculate the requirements using a 600m² playground as an example.
Key Factors Affecting EPDM Usage
First of all, we must make it clear that the amount of EPDM particles used is closely related to the thickness. Generally speaking, the thickness of the EPDM particles in the playground is between 1.5cm-3cm. The thicker the thickness, the better the safety performance, and of course the higher the cost.
Paving thickness: Usually the thickness of the playground is 1.5cm to 3cm (need to be determined according to safety standards)
EPDM particle density: about 1.4-1.6 tons/cubic meter (calculated as 1.6 tons/m³)
Calculation formula: Amount (tons) = area × thickness × density
Practical Scenarios for Example
For the convenience of calculation, we take three paving thicknesses as an example:
If the paving thickness is 1.5cm:
The weight of EPDM particles required for laying per square meter is: 1 square meter * 0.015 meters = 0.015 cubic meters
The weight of EPDM particles required for laying per square meter is: 0.015 cubic meters * 1.6 tons/cubic meters = 0.024 tons
The total amount of EPDM particles required for a 600 square meter playground is: 600 square meters * 0.024/square meter = 14.4 tons
If the paving thickness is 2cm:
The volume of EPDM particles required for laying per square meter is: 1 square meter * 0.02 meters = 0.02 cubic meters
Therefore, the weight of EPDM particles required for each square meter is: 0.02 cubic meters * 1.6 tons/cubic meters = 0.032 tons
The total amount of EPDM particles required for a 600 square meter playground is: 600 square meters * 0.032 tons/square meters = 19.2 tons
If the laying thickness is 3cm:
The weight of EPDM particles required for each square meter is: 1 square meter *0.03 meters = 0.03 cubic meters
The weight of EPDM particles required for each square meter is: 0.03 cubic meters * 1.6 tons/cubic meters = 0.048 tons
The total amount of EPDM particles required for a 600 square meter playground is: 600 square meters *0.048/square meter = 28.8 tons
Important Notes
Actual thickness: needs to be adjusted according to the purpose of the site (such as children’s activity area recommended ≥20mm).
Supplier consultation: The particle density of different manufacturers may be slightly different. It is recommended to confirm the specific parameters.
Layered construction: If the bottom layer (such as rubber cushion) is included, it needs to be calculated separately.
Of course, this is only a theoretical amount. There will be a certain loss during the actual construction process. It is recommended to prepare 5%-10% more
Summary
Finally, although the price of EPDM particles is not very cheap, it is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, colorful, and elastic. It is an ideal material for building a playground.
